Due to the recent decline in the world of print media, Carlan Tapp has largely relied on the internet to share his images and the voices of the people he photographs. His experience has been that despite challenging circumstances, many of the people he photographs want others to know their stories. “Having a camera with you gives the people a little bit of hope,” Tapp says. Here we see Bonnie Gilmore listening as her mother, Alice Gilmore, talks about the family’s ceremonial and burial sites being destroyed by mining in the vicinity. “I still believe in the power of the photograph,” the artist says. “I just want better things for humanity.”
