Helen Greene Blumenschein grew up in New York City until she was ten, when she moved to Taos with her parents, Ernest L. and Mary Greene Blumenschein, both prominent artists. The strong creative atmosphere of her family inspired an interest in art from the time she was a youngster. Blumenschein studied at Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, in Paris for two years, and then in New York at the Art Students League. A lifetime deep interest in people, ecology and archaeology is evident in Miss Blumenschein’s dominant work subjects, which depict the mountainous southwest in which she lived most of her life.
