Raymond Jonson was influenced early on by Kandinsky’s The Spiritual in Art . He moved to Santa Fe in 1922 from Chicago and settled in New Mexico permanently. Jonson was a confirmed modernist and he first painted abstract landscapes with harmonious hues and simplified landforms. His work became more non-objective over time. Jonson was an important teacher at the University and he was an open-minded, passionate advocate of contemporary art, which he showed in his Albuquerque gallery.
