Alex Harris was born in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in the South. He graduated from Yale in 1971. From 1972-1979 he lived in New Mexico photographing Hispanic villages, and made a similar survey of Eskimo villages in Alaska. During this period he began teaching at Duke University where he founded The Center for Documentary Studies in 1989. He is currently the Creative Director of the Lewis Hine Documentary Fellows Program, also at Duke.
