Agnes Martin was a very well-known artist who came from New York to live in New Mexico. She initially moved to Cuba, New Mexico, then Galisteo and finally Taos - places where she could work in solitude with intense focus.  Her mature work was based on a horizontal grid which she used to structure her aesthetic ideas.  Her paintings are subtle, with thin lines and bands of color washes.
